One of the world’s most important fossil sites — and one of the least visited. On Farm Grasplatz near Keetmanshoop, the exposed shale beds contain fossils of Mesosaurus, small crocodile-like reptiles that lived in freshwater seas 250–270 million years ago. The critical detail: identical Mesosaurus fossils are found only here and in South America — proof that Africa and South America were once joined as Gondwana. Guided one-hour tours with Giel. The 10km hiking trail and 4×4 trail explore the broader farm. Two Schutztruppe (German colonial troops) graves are also on the property.
