The Kavango people are widely regarded as the finest woodcarvers in southern Africa. Along the B8 north of Rundu’s town centre, and at the roadside market near the Okavango bridge, craftsmen sell work produced from Rhodesian teak and other hardwoods: detailed masks, animal sculptures, decorative spoons and bowls, furniture, and — the most prized pieces — exquisitely carved full-size wooden doors inlaid with traditional geometric patterns. Buy directly from the maker at prices far below what the same pieces fetch in Windhoek curio shops.
