The Okavango River at Rundu is wide, papyrus-lined and spectacularly birdy. Sunrise and sunset cruises from the river lodges pass hippo pods, crocodile basking spots and stands of riparian forest alive with kingfishers, bee-eaters, herons, African fish eagles and occasional pel’s fishing owls. Tiger fishing — the sport fishing pursuit of the Kavango region — is a particular draw, with the powerful tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus) putting up some of the most demanding fights in freshwater angling. Excursions bookable through most Rundu river lodges.
