The Walvis Bay Salt Works is one of the largest solar salt operations in Africa — producing approximately 1 million tons of salt per year, supplying over 90% of South Africa’s industrial salt. The evaporation pans turn vivid pink and red due to halobacteria and algae — a surreal landscape that also happens to attract huge concentrations of flamingos, which feed on the same organisms that colour the water. The salt pans can be viewed from the road; guided tours are available through local operators.
