Swakopmund is the best-preserved German colonial town in the world outside Europe — a walkable open-air museum of Wilhelmine and Art Nouveau architecture. Key buildings: the Woermannhaus (1906) with its landmark tower; the eccentric Hohenzollernhaus topped by a globe-carrying Atlas figure; the sandstone Altes Gefängnis prison (1909, architect Heinrich Bause); the Kaiserliches Bezirksgericht (Imperial District Court, 1906); and the Lutheran Christ Church. A self-guided walking trail takes 1–2 hours and covers the entire historic core.
