Built in 1814 by London Missionary Society missionary Heinrich Schmelen, the Schmelenhaus is the oldest surviving building in Namibia. Schmelen established the first mission station in southwestern Africa here and built this house for himself and his Nama wife. Now a national monument and small museum. In 1978 the entire Schmelenhuis, Evangelical Church Complex, Mission Church and cemetery were proclaimed National Monuments.
