One of the most consequential events in Namibian history took place in Bethanie. In 1883, at the house of Nama chief Josef Frederiks II, Adolf Lüderitz purchased the territory of Angra Pequena (modern Lüderitz) and a 140km-wide coastal strip from the Orange River northward — the transaction that triggered German colonization of all of Namibia. A small marker commemorates this fateful moment.
