One of the oldest mission buildings in Namibia — the Rhenish Mission established its Omaruru station in 1870 under missionary Hugo Hahn. By 1872 Gottlieb Viehe was here translating the Bible into the Herero language — one of the foundational acts of Herero literacy. The original mission house survives and is a declared National Monument. Omaruru’s entire development as a town grew around this mission. The building is beautifully preserved and set in mature garden grounds.
