The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission left a remarkable trail of stone churches and mission stations across Ovamboland — the most architecturally significant being the Nakambale Church at Olukonda (accessible from both Ondangwa and Oshakati). Built by Rev Rautanen in the 1880s–1920s, the church’s thick stone walls, narrow windows and modest steeple stand in striking contrast to the flat mahangu-field landscape. The wider Ovamboland mission trail connects Olukonda to Elim (near Outapi) and Onandjokwe — each with its own layered history of colonial-era Christianity and Ovambo cultural encounter.
