Inside the Kolmanskop hospital, the German diamond miners installed the first X-ray machine ever used in the southern hemisphere (c.1910). The machine was used to scan workers suspected of swallowing diamonds. This remarkable piece of medical and technological history still stands — partially buried in sand — and is one of the most striking exhibits in the ghost town.
