Okahandja is the spiritual and political heart of the Herero nation — and its most sacred site is the royal burial ground in the centre of town, where three paramount chiefs lie: Tjamuaha (died 1861), Maharero (died 1890) and Hosea Kutako (died 1970) — the latter a key figure in Namibia’s independence movement and the man who petitioned the United Nations against South African occupation. The graves are proclaimed National Monuments and can be visited year-round. Particularly significant during Herero Day in August.
