Gobabis (population ~15,000) is the capital of the Omaheke Region and the last major town before the Buitepos/Mamuno border crossing into Botswana on the Trans-Kalahari Highway (B6). It sits at the edge of the Kalahari — flat, red-sand savannah stretching east to the Botswana frontier. Namibia’s Omaheke is prime cattle country; the region has one of the highest concentrations of commercial game and cattle farms in the country. Gobabis has fuel, supermarkets, a hospital and banks. The surrounding farms — many offering accommodation — are the main tourism draw.
