Etosha’s 40+ waterholes scattered around the pan’s edge form the backbone of any self-drive visit. The strategic waterholes for game variety: Okondeka (natural spring on pan edge — excellent lion), Salvadora (pan views, cheetah sightings), Charitsaub (lion territory), Homob (gemsbok, springbok concentrations), Klein Namutoni (near Fort Namutoni, productive for black-faced impala), and the floodlit camp waterholes at Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni for night viewing. Game concentrations peak May–October as the surrounding veld dries and animals converge from greater distances.
