The Alte Feste (Old Fort) was built in 1890 and is the oldest surviving building in Windhoek. Once the headquarters of the German Schutztruppe colonial military force, it now houses the State Museum’s main historical collection — covering pre-colonial Namibia, the German colonial period, the Herero and Nama genocide, the South African mandate era and the independence struggle. Essential for understanding the full arc of Namibian history before travelling the country.
