One of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in Africa — a herd of 250–300 feral horses living freely in the Namib Desert, 20km west of Aus on the B4. Their origin traces to 1915: German cavalry horses fled into the desert after a WWI bombing raid near Garub. For 80 years they lived undisturbed inside the restricted diamond area, evolving remarkable drought and heat tolerance. View from the shaded hide beside the Garub waterhole. Best: late afternoon as the horses come to drink.
