Africa’s largest concentration of rock petroglyphs and Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2007). Over 2,500 individual engravings cover the sandstone outcrops of the Aba Huab valley — carved by San hunter-gatherers over at least 2,000 years. Subjects include rhinoceros, elephant, giraffe, ostrich, lion and rare combinations of human and animal footprints that are interpreted as ritual and spiritual records rather than simple art. The name Twyfelfontein (‘Doubtful Spring’ in Afrikaans) refers to the seasonal spring that has drawn people to this valley for millennia. Guided tours only — guides available on-site, walks take 1–2 hours.
