The Skeleton Coast earned its name from the bones of sailors and whales that once littered the shore — and from the ships that the Benguela fog and treacherous currents drove onto the beach. The most photographed wrecks are the Eduard Bohlen (a 2,700-ton cargo ship that ran aground in 1909 and now sits 500m inland as the desert has advanced), the Dunedin Star (1942) and the rusting hulk of the Zeila visible from the C34 near Henties Bay. The wrecks are best explored on organised 4×4 or fly-in tours.
