Capital of the Kavango East Region and the main services hub on the trans-Caprivi highway heading northeast toward Botswana and Victoria Falls. Rundu sits on the southern bank of the Okavango River — here wide, green and lined with wild date palms and mango trees that give the town its informal name. A busy town of around 60,000 with fuel, supermarkets, banks, a hospital and vehicle workshops. The town is famous for its Kavango woodcarving industry — expert craftsmen produce intricate teak masks, bowls, animal sculptures and furniture sold at the roadside market north of town. From Rundu, the B8 highway runs east through Bwabwata National Park to Katima Mulilo and the Caprivi Strip.
