When the Kunene River runs in full seasonal flood, Ruacana Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Africa: 120 metres high and 700 metres wide — broader than Victoria Falls in flood. The falls straddle the Namibia-Angola border on the Kunene River and were harnessed for hydroelectric power in 1978; the Ruacana hydropower scheme diverts most of the flow when the dam is operational. To see the falls in full flood you need to visit during the wet season (February–April) when Angola releases water. In dry years the falls can be reduced to a trickle. The Ruacana Hippo Pool below the falls is accessible year-round and reliably active.
