The Rehoboth Museum documents the extraordinary story of the Rehoboth Basters — descendants of Cape Colony mixed-heritage families who trekked north across the Orange River under their leader Hermanus van Wyk and settled at Rehoboth in 1870, seeking self-governance beyond colonial rule. They established their own constitution and community laws and maintained a degree of independence through the German and South African colonial periods. The museum also houses archaeological finds including an open-air burial site. A little-known but genuinely moving story of a people carving out their own identity.
