One of the most extraordinary trees in Africa — a giant baobab 28 metres tall and 26.5 metres in circumference, estimated at 800 years old, standing in the town of Outapi along the M123 road. The hollow trunk has been used throughout history as a chapel, a post office, a hiding place for the Ombalantu people during tribal conflicts, and a shelter during the independence war. The interior can accommodate 35 people. Since 2004 the site is a heritage centre with displays on the tree’s history, the Aambalantu Kingdom and the Namibian independence struggle.
