One of northern Namibia’s most significant heritage sites, 8km south of Ondangwa at Olukonda. The museum commemorates Finnish missionary Rev Martti Rautanen (‘Nakambale’ — ‘he who wears the hat’) who lived here from 1880 until his death in 1926 and made Olukonda the centre of the first Finnish mission station in Ovamboland, founded 1871. The centrepiece is a full-scale traditional Ndonga homestead — an open-air living museum where visitors can see traditional architecture, domestic activities and taste Owambo food prepared the traditional way. The site was declared a National Monument in 1995 and is listed with the Museums Association of Namibia. An essential cultural stop on any northern Namibia itinerary.
