Henties Bay exists for one primary purpose: fishing. The cold, nutrient-rich Benguela Current pushes enormous shoals of fish close to shore along this stretch of the Skeleton Coast — kabeljou (kob), steenbras, galjoen, blacktail and shark are all regularly landed from the beach. Surf fishing here is regarded as among the finest in southern Africa. The Henties Bay Angling Club and Penguin Angling Club of Swakopmund both run major competitions in December, drawing anglers from Namibia and South Africa. Permits are required and available in town.
