Two of the most spectacular and remote valleys in Africa — the Marienfluss and Hartmann’s Valley run parallel from north to south in the far western Kaokoland, backed by the rugged Hartmann Mountains and bordered to the west by the Skeleton Coast. The valleys floor is covered in vast grass plains, red sand dunes and moonscape rock formations; the Kunene River marks the Angolan border to the north. This is one of the world’s great overland drives — but 4×4 with high clearance, recovery gear and full jerry cans are essential. The old Marble Camp sits on a former marble mine site in Hartmann’s Valley. Closest full services: Opuwo (200km+).
