A pleasant agricultural and ranching town in the northeast Otjozondjupa Region, famous above all as the base for visiting the Hoba Meteorite — 20km to the west. Grootfontein (Afrikaans: ‘large spring’) was established as a German colonial fort settlement in 1885 and retains a peaceful, leafy character. It serves as a gateway to the Kalahari and Bushmanland (Tsumkwe and the Ju/’hoansi San) to the east, and to Rundu and the Kavango Region to the north. Good fuel, a supermarket, banks and basic services.
