Gibeon (originally Khaxa-tsûs) was settled around 1850 by Kido Witbooi, first Kaptein of the Witbooi Nama, shortly after a Rhenish mission station was established here. It remains the ancestral home of the Witbooi Nama people — one of the most significant cultural groups in Namibian history. Hendrik Witbooi, Kido’s grandson, led the famous guerrilla resistance against German colonisation from these hills and is now depicted on the Namibian dollar note. The town sits 72km south of Mariental just off the B1.
