One of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in Africa: up to 210,000 Cape fur seals congregate at Cape Cross — the largest of the 23 Cape fur seal colonies on the Namibia and South Africa coastline, and the largest single breeding colony in the world. The noise, smell and sheer animal density are overwhelming and unforgettable. Bull seals fight for harems of up to 60 females in October; pups are born in November–December and the shore becomes a creche of bleating young seals. A raised boardwalk and low wall separates visitors from the mass of animals — up-close viewing without disturbance. The reserve was proclaimed in 1968.
