The Brandberg (Daureb in Damara) is Namibia’s highest mountain, rising to 2,573m at the Königstein summit — an ancient volcanic massif that stands in total isolation above the surrounding desert plains. Its name (‘Mountain on Fire’) comes from the spectacular crimson glow at sunset. The Brandberg is one of the most important rock art sites in the world: over 45,000 individual San paintings have been documented across more than 1,000 rock shelters and caves. Beyond the White Lady, dozens of other shelters contain paintings of equal quality and rarer subjects. The mountain also harbours endemic plants and the upper plateau has been reached by only a handful of experienced mountaineers.
